Your Heart Will Break: A Mother’s Decade-Long Struggle to Help Her Child Thrive

From Stagnation to Progress: The Power of Experience and Empathy in Unlocking Neurodiverse Potential

As a special educator with years of experience working with children of all abilities, I’ve witnessed the devastating impact of unprepared educators on families. The education system churns out “qualified” professionals with little to no hands-on experience, leaving them ill-equipped to support neurodiverse children. This tragedy has broken my heart repeatedly.

Recently, I met a couple who had been taking their 10-year-old child to therapy since he was just 1 year and 4 months old. Despite years of intervention, they were shattered, distrustful, and dismissive of my approach. But I was determined to build their trust and help their child. With patience, empathy, and a simple yet effective plan, we started to see progress. The child began to express themselves, make eye contact, and walk confidently. The mother was tearful, disbelieving of the huge impact we’d made in just a short time.

This couple’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of finding the right support. It’s a reminder that even when we’ve tried everything, there’s always hope for a new beginning.

The Harsh Reality

Working with children, especially neurodiverse ones, requires experience, not just certificates or courses. Theory is far from reality, and no amount of education can replace hands-on experience. I’ve seen “qualified” educators and therapists do more harm than good, capitalizing on special needs for financial gain without regard for the families they’re supposed to help.

What Makes an Exceptionally Effective Special Educator or Therapist?

It’s not the certificates or courses; it’s the years of consistent, dedicated work with children of all abilities. It’s the ability to connect, empathize, and understand each child’s unique needs. It’s the resilience to overcome obstacles, the patience to explain and reassure, and the sincerity to build trust.

The Devastating Consequences

The education system’s emphasis on churning out “qualified” professionals without ensuring they have hands-on experience is damaging generations of children. These unprepared educators can: - Cause emotional trauma and distrust
- Delay or hinder progress
- Capitalize on special needs for financial gain
- Disregard the well-being of families

 A Call to Action

To all parents, I urge you: don’t rely solely on certificates and courses. Seek out experience, hands-on training, and mentorship. Value and respect the work you do, and prioritize building trust with families. Be aware of the potential harm caused by unprepared educators and take corrective action early on. Don’t wait decades for a child to suffer. Let’s work together to create a supportive, inclusive environment where neurodiverse children can thrive. Let’s prioritize experience, empathy, and sincerity over certificates and courses.
