Teaching Children about SafeTouch and Unsafe Touch: A Simple Role-Playing Scenario for 3-Year-Olds

You can use dolls or stuffed animals for this role-playing activity.

Step 1: Start by explaining to the child that sometimes people touch us in ways that feel good, like a hug or a high-five, and sometimes people touch us in ways that feel uncomfortable or scary. These are called good touches and bad touches.

Step 2: Demonstrate a good touch with the dolls or stuffed animals, such as giving a hug or a high-five, and ask the child if they know what that is called.

Step 3: Then, demonstrate a bad touch, such as someone touching the doll’s private parts, and ask the child if they know what that is called.

Step 4: Teach the child to say “no” or “stop” if someone touches them in a way that feels uncomfortable or scary, using the dolls or stuffed animals as examples.

Step 5: Rehearse saying “no” or “stop” with the child, and explain that it’s important to tell a trusted adult, like a parent or teacher, if someone touches them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Step 6: Repeat the role-playing activity several times until the child is comfortable and understands the difference between good touch and bad touch, and what to do if someone touches them inappropriately.

Remember to keep it simple and age-appropriate, and use language and concepts that the child can understand. Focus on teaching the child to recognize and avoid bad touches, and to seek help if necessary. Keep it simple and stay focused on the objective of the activity.
