Breaking the System : Exposing the Reality of Therapy Centers and Empowering Parents to Take Responsibility
Exposing the Reality of Therapy Centers and Empowering Parents to Take Responsibility
As a special educator with 25 years of experience, I recently visited a therapy center in Bangalore, and I was left utterly disheartened. The center, which charged exorbitant fees, was a far cry from the promise of quality care and support for children with special needs. Instead of fostering growth, these centers are often chaotic, ineffective, and profit-driven, leaving both parents and children disillusioned.
A Broken System: Years of False Hope
Most of the parents I work with have come to me broken-hearted, carrying the heavy burden of having spent years running from one therapy center to another. Many were referred by professionals who promised progress and better outcomes for their children, only to leave these parents feeling exploited and cheated by a system that prioritizes profit over real development. They were led to believe that only with endless rounds of therapy could their children thrive.
These parents confide in me with deep regret—if only they had learned to support their children at home sooner. They now understand that meaningful progress could have been made if they had taken a more hands-on role in their child’s development. They realize that by entrusting their child’s future to a broken system, they unknowingly allowed precious time to slip away—time that could have been used to build on their child’s strengths and independence. Many of them now share how shattered they feel, seeing that their child hasn’t progressed despite years of therapy and substantial financial investment.
The pain of realizing that their child’s potential was not fully tapped, that opportunities for growth were lost, is something these parents live with daily. And yet, despite all this, the system still thrives—driven by empty promises and a lack of accountability.
A System in Chaos
Lack of Structure: Despite charging high fees, the center had no structured approach to therapy. There were no individualized education plans (IEPs), no defined goals for each child, and no accountability for progress. When asked about targets, staff members lied about having documentation. After being cornered, they finally admitted that no targets or goals had been set for the child I was visiting in the last three months and 20 days. This is not an isolated incident—it reflects a deeper systemic problem.
Untrained Staff: The staff, while qualified on paper, had no idea what an IEP was or how to set and monitor achievable goals. They failed to understand that targets should be established on a weekly or monthly basis and that parents must extend these activities at home for a comprehensive learning experience. This lack of coordination between the center and the home environment greatly hampers the child’s ability to learn and grow.
Ineffective Communication: Instead of addressing the child’s needs and engaging in meaningful dialogue with parents, the staff resorted to empty promises and misleading claims. Parents were left in the dark, often blamed for their child’s lack of progress, while the center avoided taking responsibility for its shortcomings.
Substandard Facilities: The environment at the center was dismal. Children were left unsupervised in cramped, poorly managed rooms. It was clear that the center was more focused on maintaining appearances and profits than providing meaningful care and therapy.
The Financial Burden and Emotional Toll
These centers also place an immense financial burden on families. Parents often pay large sums of money, hoping for expert care, but in return, they are handed false assurances. Meanwhile, precious time is wasted, and children miss crucial opportunities for development. The longer parents remain trapped in this broken system, the harder it becomes for their children to recover and build on their strengths.
A Wake-Up Call for Parents: Take Responsibility Before It’s Too Late
Parents, it’s time to take charge of your child’s development. We cannot afford to leave our children’s futures in the hands of disorganized, profit-driven therapy centers. By taking responsibility and playing an active role in your child’s progress, you can make a real difference in their growth and success.
Here are a few key steps parents can take to regain control:
1. Consider Home-Based Therapy:
Rather than relying solely on external therapy centers, explore home-based therapy options. These provide a more personalized and effective approach to your child’s needs. By working closely with therapists and integrating structured learning plans at home, you can ensure your child receives continuous support and learning.
2. Build a Strong Support System:
Work with professionals who genuinely understand your child’s needs and involve yourself in every step of the process. Whether it’s speech therapy, occupational therapy, or academic coaching, be an active participant. Don’t just hand over the reins—be present, ask questions, and extend the learning beyond therapy sessions by practicing skills at home.
3. Demand Transparency:
Insist on regular, detailed progress reports from therapists. These reports should include specific, measurable targets for your child and a timeline for achieving them. If a center cannot provide this level of transparency, it’s a red flag. Don’t hesitate to question their qualifications, therapy methods, and progress tracking.
4. Set Weekly and Monthly Goals:
Track your child’s progress at home with realistic, achievable goals. These can range from improving fine motor skills to building language or social interaction abilities. By setting small, measurable objectives, you can keep your child on track and continuously monitor their development.
5. Involve Family in Learning:
Learning doesn’t stop when your child leaves a therapy center. Parents must extend the activities and exercises taught in therapy into the home. Encourage siblings and family members to participate, creating a supportive learning environment that reinforces the skills your child is developing.
Unlock Your Child’s Potential: Home-Based Therapy for Real Progress

A Call to Action
It’s time to:
Research Thoroughly: Before enrolling your child in any therapy center, conduct extensive research. Visit the center, read reviews, speak with other parents, and observe the environment firsthand. Make sure they offer structured plans, set clear goals, and follow through with accountability.
Ask the Right Questions: Inquire about the center’s philosophy, the qualifications of the staff, therapy techniques, and progress tracking methods. If they cannot provide clear answers, reconsider your options.
Demand Accountability: Therapy centers should be held accountable for the services they promise. Regular communication, progress reports, and transparency are non-negotiable. If the center cannot meet these expectations, it’s time to seek alternatives.
Share Your Experiences: Help other parents by sharing your experiences, whether positive or negative. The more we talk about these issues, the more we can bring about change and prevent others from falling into the same trap.
Join Forces: Advocate for better regulations and standards in the therapy industry. Together, parents and educators can work to raise awareness and ensure that therapy centers are held to higher standards of care.
