A Breakthrough with an ASD Student I Would Like to Share
Rohit, a 15-year-old student on the autism spectrum, is a shining example of hidden potential waiting to be unlocked. With a sharp pictorial memory and an impressive ability to recall details, his strengths were apparent from the beginning. Yet, these strengths were overshadowed by significant challenges—social disconnect, emotional struggles, and behavioral concerns.
Rohit’s transformation over the past few months has been nothing short of extraordinary. From struggling to write a single sentence to becoming verbally expressive and creatively independent, his journey is proof that children with ASD have immense hidden talents and capabilities. They simply need the right guidance, a tailored approach, and an environment that fosters their growth.
This breakthrough is not just Rohit’s; it’s a message of hope for every parent of a child on the spectrum.
Rohit’s Starting Point: Understanding His Challenges
When I first met Rohit, it was evident that he had been navigating significant hurdles:
1. Emotional Disconnect and Limited Communication
- Rohit was non-verbal until the age of seven. (Attended Speech therapy for 3 months in all) Even after he began speaking, his communication was selective and minimal, limited to one-word responses or gestures.
- He displayed little to no emotional expression and struggled to recognize or respond to the emotions of those around him. This lack of emotional connection made it difficult for his family to engage with him meaningfully.
2. Behavioral Concerns
- Stimming Behaviors: Rohit exhibited repetitive self-stimulatory behaviors such as hand-flapping, rocking, thumb-sucking, and fiddling with his private parts. These behaviors, while comforting for him, were socially inappropriate and caused concern.
- Flashing and Public Nudity: He lacked awareness of personal boundaries, often undressing in public toilets or engaging in behaviors inappropriate for social settings.
3. Social Isolation and Bullying
- Rohit had difficulty connecting with peers and understanding social norms, making him a target for bullying at his special school.
- His inability to respond effectively to teasing or bullying further reinforced his isolation, withdrawal and stimming.
4. Lack of Awareness and Focus
- He appeared disconnected from his surroundings, often failing to notice people, conversations, or even potential dangers in his environment.
- While academically capable, he struggled with basic comprehension and found it difficult to generalize skills across contexts, such as using the toilet privately both at home and in public.
The Turning Point: Starting the Journey with a Tailored Approach
Our work with Rohit began with addressing his most pressing challenges through a tailored structured, step-by-step methodology. Here’s how the journey unfolded:
Phase 1: Building Connection and Foundation
The first step in Rohit’s journey was establishing a strong emotional connection with his parents and creating a structured, engaging environment for him. This foundation was critical for fostering trust and setting the stage for his progress.
1. Building a Relationship Through Play
- Family Games: We began by introducing daily playtime with games like Uno and Ludo, which helped Rohit bond with his parents in a fun, low-pressure way. These moments of connection were instrumental in strengthening his emotional ties with his family.
- Music and Sa Re Ga Ma Practice: Practicing scales brought rhythm and structure into Rohit’s day while also creating a calming and joyful experience.
2. Introducing Routine and Time Management
- Creating a Timetable: Rohit was guided to design his own daily schedule, breaking work into manageable segments and including time for breaks. This helped him structure his day and gave him a sense of control and predictability.
- Chores Around the House: He began helping with small tasks, such as tidying up, setting the table, or organizing his belongings, fostering a sense of responsibility and independence.
3. Sensorial Play and Exploration
- Hands-On Activities: Sensory play became a vital part of his routine, including activities like water play, kinetic sand, pasta sorting, and using stress balls. These activities provided him with sensory relief and helped redirect his energy in constructive ways.
- Outdoor Activities: Regular swimming sessions and visits to the beach for sand play expanded his sensory experiences, helping him feel more connected to his surroundings.
4. Developing Writing Skills
- Sentence Structuring: We began working on writing simple sentences based on familiar words and objects from his daily life. For instance, sentences like “I see the dog” or “I like the car” helped him build confidence in his ability to express himself.
- Extending Writing Skills: Over time, we encouraged him to add more details, turning basic sentences into descriptive ones, such as “I see the dog running in the park.”
Phase 2: Communication, Connection, and Awareness
After laying the groundwork through connection and routine, we focused on improving Rohit’s communication skills and increasing his awareness of his environment.
1. Regular Texting to Parents
- Starting with Facts: Rohit began sending simple texts to his parents about his day, such as “I played a game” or “I ate lunch.”
- Descriptive Communication: Gradually, his messages evolved to include details and observations, like “I played Ludo with Mom and won” or “I saw a red car on my way to the park.” This practice not only improved his communication but also fostered emotional connection with his parents.
2. Improving Eye Contact and Awareness
- Daily Interactions: Through structured activities, we encouraged Rohit to make eye contact during conversations, helping him connect more meaningfully with the people around him.
- Describing His Surroundings: We introduced exercises where Rohit would describe what he saw or experienced, such as objects in a room or events during the day. This improved his observational skills and situational awareness.
3. Introducing the Social Doll
- Purposeful Timing: Once Rohit had made significant progress in understanding his environment and improving his communication, we introduced the social doll as a tool for learning appropriate social interactions.
- Practical Scenarios: Using the doll, we practiced specific scenarios, such as greeting a friend, asking for help, or resolving conflicts. This allowed Rohit to role-play and internalize key social behaviors in a safe, supportive setting.
Phase 3: Addressing Other Immediate Concerns
Behavioral Interventions:
- We used visual supports and social dolls to teach personal boundaries and appropriate social behaviors.
- Sensory alternatives, such as stress balls and water play, helped redirect stimming behaviors to more constructive outlets.
Building Emotional Awareness:
- Emotion cards and stories introduced Rohit to basic emotions, helping him label and understand his feelings.
- Mindfulness exercises, like deep breathing, provided him with tools to manage frustration and anxiety.
Social Skills Development:
- Role-playing scenarios taught Rohit how to handle teasing and navigate social interactions.
- Daily routines and visual schedules gave him a sense of predictability, reducing tantrums and resistance.
Phase 4: Fostering Communication and Creativity further
Once the foundational issues were addressed, we shifted focus to enhancing Rohit’s communication, creativity, and connection to his environment:
1. Storytelling as a Tool for Growth
- We started with simple factual retellings of his day, like “I ate lunch” or “I played outside.” Gradually, these evolved into creative narratives where Rohit began imagining scenarios, inventing characters, and sharing stories.
- Storytelling not only boosted his creativity but also helped him connect with his surroundings and articulate his thoughts.
2. Text Updates for Connection
- Rohit began sending daily text messages to his parents, initially sharing straightforward facts like, “I finished my homework.”
- Over time, these messages became more descriptive and personal, such as, “I finished my homework and felt proud,” showcasing his growing ability to express emotions and thoughts.
Phase 3: Building Essential Life Skills
To further enhance Rohit’s development, we introduced curated worksheets focusing on 12 key areas:

A Message of Hope for Parents
Rohit’s journey is a testament to the fact that children with ASD are brimming with potential. They simply need the right environment, strategies, and support to thrive.
For parents of neurodiverse children, this story serves as a powerful reminder:
- Believe in Your Child’s Potential: Every child has hidden talents waiting to be discovered.
